Staff Report
CLAIBORNE, Tenn. — A police chase on Thursday left one dead and one injured in Grainger County, according to Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray. While on patrol in the Lower Canny area of Claiborne County, an officer from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department ran across an alleged burglary in progress.
Ray said the alleged burglars were spotted in a truck pulling a stolen four-wheeler on a small trailer. Upon being spotted, the truck fled the scene, almost hitting the patrol officer in the process.
Other officers from the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene for assistance.
Police said the alleged burglars refused to stop. The trailer that was connected to the truck struck a police car doing damage to the vehicle.
The chase reportedly continued into Grainger County where it then continued down State Route 131 towards Washburn. Several other units pursued the vehicle including officers from the sheriff’s department, Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Grainger County Sheriff’s Department.
Police said after short pursuit, the vehicle crashed. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead and the passenger was flown to UT Medical Center, according to Ray.
The names of the two individuals were not released at press time.
