The Pineville Mountains kept their hopes for a home playoff game alive as they rolled to a 52-0 win at Jenkins Friday night.
“Our kids are confident right now and winning big makes them even more confident,” said Pineville coach Bart Elam. “Whether we win by 50 or win by one we accomplished what we wanted to do and that was to be 1-0 in the district going into the Harlan game next week.”
Senior receiver/defensive back Jared Philpot had a big game for the Lions, catching two touchdown passes from Jamie Roan and returning a fumble for another score.
Andrew Douglas had a pair of short rushing scores while Tanner Mike and Connor Ford both ran for close to 100 yards, with Mike also reaching the end zone. Byron Asher also caught a TD pass from Roan in the rout.
“The running game was good tonight. Mike and Ford both had a lot of yards, Dougie didn’t get the ball as much just because of the game plan,” Elam added. “Roan threw those three touchdown passes and Jared Philpot just had a big night — he caught two touchdowns in the first half and then added that scoop and score.”
The Lions dominated from the start and enjoyed a 38-0 lead by halftime.
“The defense played very good again and we just had great field position the whole first half,” Elam said.
Pineville continued to pull away in the second half and the defense registered their second straight shutout.
It was the third straight win for the Lions as they improve to 4-3, most importantly they’re 1-0 in the district. Jenkins falls to 4-3, 0-1.
In Friday’s other District 6-1A game, Hazard beat Harlan 56-19. The Lions travel to Harlan next Friday and with a win they’ll clinch that home playoff game they’ve been striving after for years.
“The main thing is that we’re taking care of the football, we’re playing solid defense and that’s what’s important as we get into these late-season games,” said Elam.
