Shattuck resigns from tourism board
by Staff report

Staff report

Longtime Bell County Tourism board member Tom Shattuck has resigned from his position as chairman. Tourism director Judy Barton confirmed that Shattuck’s resignation letter was dated for Feb. 27.

No reason for his resignation was given in Shattuck’s letter. His term ended on Dec. 31. Since no one was appointed to replace him, Shattuck was allowed to continue serving on the board until February, according to Barton.

Shattuck was on the tourism board for over 20 years. He was originally appointed to the board by former Middlesboro Mayor Ben Hickman.

“He was a very good chairman,” said Barton. “He will be missed. He was a true believer in tourism. He understands tourism.”

Barton said Shattuck constantly contributed to the community through Bell County Tourism and the Bell County Historical Society.

According to Barton, Middlesboro Mayor Bill Kelley appointed Becky Bowling to replace Shattuck on the tourism board.

Steve Mars was also recently appointed to the board to replace Judy Hall, who passed away last year.

Judy Barton doesn't even live here. She's past it - needs to retire. She does nothing and claims credit for just applying for grants, etc.

What do we even need a tourism office for?

There's nothing to see but slums, druggies and prostitutes walking the streets. This town is really sad.

So which Bowling or Brock relative did you want to take over?

Way things are going we won't be needing that Coal House, either.

Hey you can hire me to do the job. Better yet hire Revolver. If anyone deserves a job with the county it is him. He has been here the whole time pointing out the mistakes and other buffoonery that is known as Bell County. How about it Tourism Director? Give me or Revolver a shot? I will even say that I am the third distant twice removed and re added cousin to who ever it is I am supposed to be related to in order to get that job on the tourism board. I then will say that I am related to revolver and bring him on as well.

Here we are almost into April and we're just getting new appointments that should have been ready to go last year? Maybe the same leader who said he was "lax" in his duties before still has some room for improvement.

Isn't tourism a priority for our area? I know its tough to keep finding relatives and cronies to stack these boards with but you can do it if you try. Plus, its another chance to get that election picture on the front page.
