Dylan Cox struck out 13 in a complete game four-hitter, Bell County put up seven runs over the first two innings and the Bobcats went on to a 9-2 win over Pineville on Thursday.
Cox held the Mountain Lions to just two runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out 13, walking two and hitting a batter to earn the win.
The Bobcats got two-run doubles from Caleb Smith and Jacob Rose while Austin North and Hayden Gilbert both had two hits, scored a run and knocked one in.
Will Adams had an RBI double and Matt Hubbard an RBI single for Pineville while Tanner Mike singled and scored a run, Tyler Eavns walked and scored and Jordan Slusher also singled in the game.
Cox struck out two while sitting the Lions down in order in the top of the first and the Bobcats put up four runs in the bottom of the frame. Jeremiah Partin and Evan Brock both singled to start the inning and Cox walked to load the bases. Aaron Jenkins brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly and, one out later, Smith ripped hit a two-run double and North followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Lions got one run back in the top of the second as Mike singled with two out and stole second. Adams then doubled to bring Mike home to cut the lead to 4-1. Hubbard was hit by a pitch, but Cox came back with a strike out to end the inning.
Bell’s offense picked right up in the bottom of the inning. Scotty Fields walked and Partin was hit by a pitch. The runners moved up and Fields scored on Brock’s ground out to the pitcher. Cox reached on a fielder’s choice as Partin was thrown out at home for the second out. But Jenkins walked and Rose continued his recent hot hitting with a two-run double that stretched the lead to 7-1.
From there, Pineville pitcher Kyle Capps settled down and held the Bobcats to just two more runs the rest of the way. But the damage had been done and Cox was cruising.
Pineville scored their other run in the fourth when Evans walked and took second on a wild pitch. He scored two outs later on Hubbard’s base hit, but 7-2 was as close as the Lions would get.
North scored on a two-out single by Gilbert in the fifth and Gilbert would later come home as Brock reached on an error to make it 9-2.
The Lions appeared to have scored another run in the sixth as Evans reached on a two-base error in the outfield with one out and took third on a wild pitch. Mike’s fly ball looked to be deep enough to score Evans, but the Bobcats appealed the play and the umpires ruled Evans out for leaving the bag early to end the inning.
Cox struck out the side in the seventh aroud a one-out walk to Hubbard to close out the game.
Both teams return to action on Monday with Bell County (10-8) hosting Harlan County in the first of a two-game 52nd District series and Pineville (6-7) visiting Jellico, Tenn., before heading to Knox Central for a 51st District match-up on Tuesday.
