In the early-to-mid 90s, professional wrestling was at its apex across the nation. There wasn’t a school, mall or anywhere else you could go without seeing someone sporting a pro wrestling t-shirt with their favorite wrestler on it.

While the WCW was ultimately purchased by wrestling mogul Vince McMahon, there are still some WCW superstars that standout to all wrestling fans. One of those is Diamond Dallas Page. The future WWE Hall of Famer, along with Jake “The Snake” Roberts will be live and in-person at the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention Friday through Sunday.

The convention will be held at Heritage Hall at the Lexington Convention Center in Downtown Lexington. Hours are from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to successfully running his business DDP Yoga, it was recently announced that Diamond Dallas Page was going to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during Wrestlemania weekend. He is one of the few WCW-bred wrestlers to receive the honor.

“It’s pretty cool when you think about it. The Four Horsemen, they went in but they were in WWE and WCW. Of course, (The Nature Boy Ric Flair) being the front runner, Sting and then me,” said DDP during a telephone interview. “I’m really glad to see Ricky (Morton) and Robert (Gibson) get in too. I couldn’t be any happier than to be with this group of guys.”

“It’s an honor. When I found out, I couldn’t even talk. I was talking to Triple H and he just went to it in the middle of a conversation…in October. I just never saw it coming. Normally nobody ever finds out about any of this stuff until January or February. It’s super special. If you look at my career, no one did it like I did it and never will. The stars won’t ever be aligned for that guy with the same work ethic.”

Diamond Dallas Page didn’t take the normal road to the ring as many wrestlers before him. At the late-age of 35, Dallas decided he wanted to try his hand at being a wrestler.

“When I told Michael “P.S.” Hayes — who is one of my best buddies — he literally fell on the ground laughing,” said Page. “Everyone said I was insane. No one knew my work ethic. No one really understood my tenacity. The way I saw it is every person that said I couldn’t do it, I was not going to prove them wrong. I was going to prove me right.”

Rising from that aspiring 35-year-old trainee to a WCW champion felt like a well-deserved journey for DDP. Throughout that time, the hall of famer had countless feuds for different titles. One of the his favorite feuds was his encounter with “The Macho Man” Randy Savage.

“We were the Feud of the Year in 1997. We lit it up, we main-evented all across the country for almost a whole year,” said Page. “People used to tell me all the time ‘I know it’s all wrestling but you and Savage. I know you hated him.’ In reality, Randy was making me the superstar I became.”

Since his wrestling career has ended, Diamond Dallas Page has been busy with the promotion of DDP Yoga and the recent push he has received within the WWE with a new DVD release and being inducted into the hall of fame.

“It’s really an amazing and crazy time, and I’m grateful to be in the middle of it all,” said Page. “That’s the run that I’m getting with the WWE right now. And they let me wear my DDP Yoga stuff everywhere. Brock (Lesnar) gets to do that, Rock gets to do that and I don’t know anybody else.”

“I am very grateful to be in this position. It’s at the height of my company. My company, DDP Yoga, is literally going through the roof.”

If you believe DDP was successful inside a wrestling ring, he is just as successful outside of it. According to thetoptens.com, DDP Yoga is ranked No. 1 among the best home workout programs with Beachbody’s Insanity and P90 X ranking second and third. The website is loaded with life changing stories about DDP Yoga.

One person who benefited from having DDP as a friend was WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts — who will also be at the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention.

“He moved me in with him and broke it all down. He said we were going to to start a new way of life,” said Roberts about DDP helping him with personal issues. “He just kept working with me and changed the way I looked at things, changed the way I thought about things, changing what I wore because I used to wear t-shirts with negative messages on them.”

“He taught me a whole new way to look at life and walk through life. He taught me a new way to nourish my body. Even the foods I was eating, he taught me the right things. He basically remodeled me and gave me an overhaul. Those are the things that count.”
