Golf season is in full swing for the Middlesboro Lady Jackets, winning two matches at Wasioto Winds. On Aug. 18, MHS defeated Knox Central, who only had two players compete in the match. On Thursday, the Lady Jackets defeated Corbin, shooting a 204 over the nine hole match. Corbin shot a team score of 206.
This year’s team has a new look, from players to coaches. Connie Lasley has taken over the program and is looking to build on the solid foundation of the program and the new players coming in.
“We are excited about this year’s team and are really working hard towards the region at the end of the year. We have a great number on the team, of which the majority is still in middle school,” said Lasley. “My husband, Greg is helping with instruction and is really excited about the possibilities of this golf program.”
Laura Durham, a senior on this year’s team, led the Lady Jackets on Thursday with a 44. She was followed closely by junior Emily Francis with a 47. Playing in the three, and only a seventh grader, Grecia Lasley recorded a 52. Rounding out the scoring on Thursday was Anna Voges who shot 61. Other team members playing in the match were Sophie Bennett and Madison Greene.
Durham will also be playing in the All “A” state tournament next month in Somerset, at Woodsen Bend golf resort. She qualified for the state by being one of the top two qualifiers in the regional tournament, played on Aug. 3. The Lady Jackets returned to action Tuesday with a home match against Whitley County.
