BABOURVILLE — George Carroll (junior/Chester, England) collected two goals as the Union College men’s soccer team cruised to a 3-0 win over Talladega (Alabama) in the final match of the Thomas Trammell Memorial Classic.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season, while the Tornadoes start the season 0-4.
For a majority of the first-half, the Bulldogs and Tornadoes were locked in a defensive showcase. Neither team could fire off a solid shot on goal.
With the first-half coming to a close, Andre Scott (junior/St. Catherine, Jamaica) found striding Carroll from the right side of the box to break the scoreless match at the 40:24 mark.
Union only managed five shots in the first-half while Talladega managed two shots.
One minute into the second-half, Carroll found the back of the net, this time off a Jason Jacobs (junior/Downs, Manchester, Jamaica) volley from the far left corner of the Union endzone. The Carroll header gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 at the 46:49 mark.
As the match winded down, Dawson Marcum (senior/Richmond) extended the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 on a Craig Ellis (freshman/Cheshire, England) assist at the 84:05 mark.
The match saw two strong goalkeeper performances as Christian Neira led Talladega with a game-high seven saves while Macelo Mercuri (sophomre/Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished with five saves for Union.
The Bulldogs outshot the Tornadoes 14-9 while controlling the corner kicks 7-1.
Union will get some much needed rest after two matches in a row. The Bulldogs will be back in action Sept. 5th as they travel to Shawnee State (Ohio) for non-conference action starting at 3 p.m.
