Pineville falls in scrimmage

Pineville High School welcomed Williamsburg on Tuesday for a summer league scrimmage. The Mountain Lions fell to the Yellow Jackets, 40-38. The teams played two 16-minute periods.

Trent Lefevers led the Mountain Lions down the stretch to keep them with reach. He tallied 13 points in the game. Josh Lawson aided in the effort with 12 points.

Skyler Griffith led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points. Hagen Hawn followed suit with 9 points of his own.

The game went back-and-forth for the majority of the time with Pineville battling from behind. Williamsburg began to pull away in the first half, racking up a 23-14 lead following a 10-2 run.

The Mountain Lions came out strong in the second half. After a basket from Griffith, Pineville cut into the lead with three points from Lefevers and four points from Lawson, bringing the score to 25-23 early in the second half.

Another run by the Yellow Jackets put Williamsburg up 32-27.

With minutes remaining in the final half, Pineville was down 35-27 after a layup by Tanner Boggs. The Mountain Lions went on a 9-3 run to come with two points.

Lefevers scored on a layup during a fast break to tie the game up with 49 seconds remaining.

Pineville came close to stealing the inbound pass, but Williamsburg kept possession. With 23 seconds left in the game, Griffith scored from underneath the basket to put the Yellow Jackets up by two.

The Mountain Lions kept the ball moving with seconds ticking off the clock. Lefevers missed a desperation shot at the buzzer, giving Williamsburg a 40-38 victory.

Pineville is set to continue their summer schedule on Wednesday with a game against Harlan County. On Thursday, they will play Harlan Independent and Red Bird.
