ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Union College volleyball’s Ana Calaza (senior/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s Defender of the Week for the period ending Aug. 30, the conference office announced on Monday.

The NAIA made some changes to their player of the week system for the 2015 volleyball season. There will now be three awards each week: Attacker, Defender and Setter of the Week.

Calaza has earned AAC Libero of the Week honors 11 times and Player of the Week once in her career. She has been named AAC Libero of the Year the past two seasons.

This past week, Calaza paced the Union defense as the Bulldogs went 2-2 in the LWC Volleyball Classic. Calaza collected 76 digs in the classic, giving her 1,622 digs in her three-year career.

She collected a season-high 24 digs, including three service aces in a 3-1 win over IU-Southeast on Aug. 28. Calaza also finished the classic with three kills, five aces and 63 assists.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday and Saturday as they take part in the Marietta College Tournament. Union will face Centre, Marietta (Ohio) and Theil (Pennsylvania) in the tournament.
