ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The Union College men’s soccer team swept the Appalachian Athletic Conference weekly awards after picking up a nice non-conference win over the weekend. Guillerme Cruz (freshman/Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week and Macelo Mercuri (sophomore/Sao Paulo) was named AAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Cruz scored his first collegiate goal in a 2-0 win over Shawnee State (Ohio) on Sept. 5. The Cruz goal proved to be all the Bulldogs would need as he was credited with the game winning goal. He is tied for 26th nationally in game winning goals.
Mercuri collected his second straight shutout to begin the season. He collected three saves in the win over Shawnee State and now has eight on the season.
The Bulldogs are off to a 3-0 start to begin the season.
