Union wins, draws with Milligan

BARBOURVILLE — The Union College men’s soccer team cruised to a 3-0 win over Milligan (Tennessee) in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, Saturday afternoon.

Union’s fifth shutout of the season improves the Bulldogs to 5-0-2 and 1-0-1 in conference play. Milligan falls to 2-7-0 and 1-1-0 in AAC action.

Union broke the scoreless match on a Louis Nuttal (freshman/Manchester, England) goal off an Andre Scott (junior/St. Catherine, Jamaica) volley at the 31:25 mark in the first half.

Going into halftime, Union controlled the match 1-0 and the shot advantage, 13-4. The Bulldogs fired an outstanding six shots in the first three minutes of the contest, but only managed one goal.

The Bulldogs added two late goals in the second-half, as Steve Moore (junior/Clacton-on-Sea, England ) collected his first goal on the season at the 77:06 mark. With five minutes remaining in regulation, Andre Scott got in on the action for the Bulldogs, sealing the Bulldogs 3-0 victory.

Union outshot Milligan 19-8 in the match.

Marcelo Mercuri (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected his fourth shutout on the season and added three more saves to his total, giving him 21 on the season.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sept. 23 against Bluefield (Virginia.). The AAC action is set for 7 p.m.

Women’s soccer battles to a draw

The Union College women’s soccer team collected their first draw of the season with a 2-2 match against Milligan Saturday afternoon in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.

Union stands at 4-2-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in AAC play. Milligan moved to 2-3-1 and 1-0-1 on the young season.

The Buffaloes got on the board first as Brittany Davis found the back of an empty net at the 43:38 mark. Milligan’s goal before the first-half looked to hold as Union’s offense struggled to get anything going.

The second-half saw the Bulldogs battle back, scoring two quick goals. Jessica Austin (senior/Altadena, Calif.) pulled the Bulldogs within 1-1 as she drove past three defenders on a breakaway goal at the 57:58 mark.

The Bulldogs’ second goal came on a Madison Meyer (freshman/Taylor Mill) corner kick that found Sharika Ingram (senior/Manchester, Jamaica) for a beautiful header. The Ingram header at the 60:04 mark gave Union a 2-1 lead.

With the second-half coming to a close, Davis’ equalizer at the 81:09 mark sent the game into overtime at 2-2.

Overtime play saw both teams get good looks at the goal, but was unable to find the back of the net as the match ended in a draw.

Austin led the Bulldog attack with a match-high 10 shots and six on goal. She is now tied for the team lead in goals with four.

Charlotte Stephens led Milligan with a match-high eight saves, while Kendall Ellington (junior/London) finished with five saves for the Bulldogs.

Union will return to AAC action on Sept. 23, traveling to Bluefield for a 5 p.m. match.
