The Lady Jackets couldn’t slow down Knox Central on Tuesday as the Lady Panthers defeated Middlesboro 54-47 in the SEKC Panorama.
“The girls were excited to play. We’ve been going against each other for about a month now,” said Lady Jacket head coach Ron Edwards. “It (the game) got a little physical, and we’ve got to learn to be able to play through bumps. We don’t play well when we get bumped a little bit.”
The main thing for Edwards was the team didn’t quit.
“They found a way. We got back in the ball game,” said the coach. “I’m tickled to death with this bunch. I think we’re going to be an exciting group to watch when we get a few wrinkles ironed out.”
The Lady Panthers held a 15-11 lead heading into the second quarter of the game. The Lady Jackets were able to narrow the lead to 27-25 heading into halftime. Malorie Carter led the second quarter effort with four points while Erica Gambrel and Bailey Hensley aided with three points each.
A strong third quarter from Knox Central helped the team pull away from Middlesboro. Heading out of halftime, the Lady Jackets tied the game at 27 after Bailey Brunsma hit both of her free throws.
The Lady Panthers gained a sizable lead following a 23-10 run that extended into the fourth quarter. The run put Knox Central up 50-37. Two straight Middlesboro baskets from Macy Mink narrowed the lead to 50-41.
Following a 3-pointer from Knox Central’s Briana Helton, Jadria Brown and Grace Gent scored back-to-back to narrow the lead, but the clock ran out with the Lady Panthers victorious.
