Piano students of Linda Ogan Cupp — Shane Sumner, Lydia Ferguson and Oliver Sayani — presented their Senior Recital on May 17 at Tazewell Baptist Church.

Sumner began piano lessons with “Mrs. Linda” in the eighth-grade. His progress in lessons led to his success in the Claiborne High School Band where he was percussion section leader for two years. Sumner is also assistant choir director at his church, Tazewell Baptist, and was one of CHS’ valedictorians.

Ferguson began her musical education with Mrs. Linda when she was 4 years old. Since this early beginning, she progressed to be chosen to play for the Tennessee 4-H Congress for two years. She has provided musical accompaniment for the Claiborne Adult Education and Claiborne High School graduation ceremonies for the past two years. Ferguson also regularly plays at her church, Tazewell Baptist. She was also a valedictorian at Claiborne High School.

Sayani met Mrs. Linda when he was a fifth-grade band student at H.Y. Livesay. His interest in music grew from success with the saxophone and soon began piano lessons. Sayani’s progress led him to prepare for and ultimately audition for the demanding Tennessee Governor’s School. He regularly plays piano and guitar for his church, Christ the King Catholic.

Each student performed selections from past recitals along with a duet with Cupp. They surprised everyone by playing an impromptu trio of “Heart and Soul.” At the end of the recital, the seniors presented Cupp with a beautiful vase and a dozen roses.

The following Sunday, May 24, was Cupp’s annual Spring Recital, also held at Tazewell Baptist Church. Twenty of Cupp’s students presented and rendered performances of works by great composers. Cupp said, “I always pick a theme for the recital, so this year’s was “The Classics” — Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Bach and other famous composers.”

This year, as in years past, the recital will be aired on a channel of the LMU network.

Students that participated in the recital were: Jessee Westbrook, Victor Brooks, Lily Nolan, Meredith Allen, Emily Chumley, Dan Chepkwong, Macie Sumner, Samantha DeBusk, Zoie Campbell (voice and piano), Sophie DeBusk (harp), Madeline Allen, Natalie Johnson, Abigail Ferguson, Laurel Nolan, Cade Oculam, Tori Wright, Shane Sumner, Lydia Ferguson and Oliver Sayani.

Cupp has degrees in music from UTK and a Master of Education from LMU. If you are interested in lessons, she can be reached at 423-526-3336.
