MIDDLESBORO — Discover Downtown Middlesboro (DDM) will kick off their 2010 Christmas Extravaganza this weekend.

Local Merchants will have a Tree Lighting on Saturday at Fountain Square at 7 p.m. Everyone is asked to assemble on the Mikel’s Pharmacy corner. Middlesboro Primary Choir will be performing Christmas Carols. Rev. Phil Hill, Covenant United Methodist, will share the Christmas story and Billie Booth, retired Middlesboro High School English Teacher, will be reading “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”.

“We even think Santa will be coming to town for this special event!” said Teresa Brown, coordinator for the DDM Christmas programs.

Next up on the calendar for the holiday season is the annual Middlesboro Christmas Parade. The parade will be held Saturday, December 4, at 2 p.m. The parade route will be on Cumberland Avenue. It will begin at 15th Street and head West to 20th Street.

DDM is asking anyone who wishes to participate to pre-register by calling Brown at 606-248-2551 or 606-269-6911 to reserve a spot. There is no cost to participate, however pre-registration is mandatory.

“We are looking for bands, floats, beauty queens, youth organizations, dance groups, cheerleaders, ball teams, etc., to join us,” said Brown. “Santa, of course, will make his grand entrance at the end of the parade, carried by the Middlesboro Fire Department.”

Santa will also be dropping in to visit with children throughout December. He will be in town at Fountain Square on December 13, 14, 22, and 23, from 5- 7 p.m.

DDM is also looking for school choirs, youth choirs, church choirs, etc., that would like to sing Christmas carols while Santa is in Middlesboro on these nights. Space is limited, so contact Brown at the previously listed phone numbers if your group would like to participate.
