She was born in Claiborne County on November 19, 1920. She was the daughter of the late William and Laura Guy. She was a life-long member of the Greer's Chapel Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher from the Claiborne County School System. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Carson Brooks; sisters: Lela Owens, Beulah Guy, and Lula Allison; brothers: Fred and Frank Guy; sisters: Mankey and Mellie, who died during infancy; nephews Jerry Allison, Jack, Luther Bob, J.B. and Ray Owens.
Survivors include her son, Johnnie Brooks and wife, Alice of Harrogate; daughters: Donna Maples and husband, Alvie of Harrogate, Billie Davis and husband, Dan of Cleveland; grandsons: Wesley and John Brooks of Harrogate, Mark Davis and wife, Allison of Cleveland; granddaughters: Stephanie Pointer of Knoxville and Joan Fretwell and husband, Keith of Cleveland, Tn. Great-grandchildren: Davis Lane, Daxuelle and Erin Fretwell, Noah, Elizabeth and Emily Davis of Cleveland; special niece, Joy Evans and husband, Fred of Shawanee; niece, Marilyn Allison and daughters: Tracy Crawford and Beth Weisel of California; niece June Crawford in Washington D.C.; nephew, Billy Joe Owens of Ohio; one great-nephew, Kermit Owens and wife, Barbara; one great-niece, Sondra Smith; other family members include sister-in-law, Aileen Noe and Pauline Brooks of Tazewell; a host of friends and neighbors.
Graveside Services were held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at Guy Cemetery in Greer's Chapel with the Rev. David Bolton officiating. Music by Barbara Hatfield. Bessie will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren.
