Middlesboro Lodge #119 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks annually awards a total of $3,000 in scholarships to two graduating seniors from Middlesboro High School, $1,500 each to a boy and a girl.

Students are selected by a committee of professionals at the school, and selection is based on scholarship, leadership and financial need. This year's recipients are Jared Ryan Akers, son of Jessica Eldridge and Gillis Elliott; and Brandy Michelle Anderson, daughter of Marilyn and Billy Joe Anderson.

Jared plans to attend Southeast Community & Technical College studying engineering while Brandy will attend the University of the Cumberland's pursuing a degree in business.
