Bulldogs Suffer a Tough 10-7 Loss to Gibbs

On Friday, Oct. 12, the Claiborne Bulldogs traveled to Gibbs to take on the Eagles. Gibbs won the district match-up with a close score of 10-7.

Gibbs won the coin toss and chose to defer to the second half, giving Claiborne the ball first. Three minutes into to first quarter, Elliot Stone threw an interception giving Gibbs the ball. Gibbs later scored the only points in the first quarter with a 2-yard run by Joey Shipman. The extra point was good. The Eagles took the 7-0 lead going into the second quarter.

At the start of the second quarter Claiborne's Erik Stone intercepted a pass and gave Claiborne the ball back. However, neither team could score. Gibbs kept the 7-0 lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Eagles started off with the ball, but failed to get the first down. The Bulldogs got the ball back and with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, scored with a 2-yard pass from Elliot Stone to Matt Whitaker. Jimmy Beveridge successfully kicked the extra point. At the end of the third quarter the score was tied at 7-7.

One minute into the fourth quarter the Eagles' Derek Cole kicked a field goal to give Gibbs a 10-7 lead. Claiborne was unable to get another score and the Eagles won with the final score of 10-7.

Claiborne had 17 first downs, while Gibbs had only nine. Claiborne punted three times with a average of 33 yards a kick. Gibbs punted four times with an average of 36 yards a kick. Gibbs fumbled once and lost possession. Claiborne had seven penalties for 45 yards and Gibbs had five penalties for 45 yards.

David Fuson led the Bulldogs in rushing with a total of 159 yards on 25 attempts.

Eric Stone led receiving with 77 yards on five receptions. Jared DeBusk was next in receiving with a total of 57 yards on 5 receptions.

Elliot Stone was 22/39 passing for a total of 219 yards.

Matt Whitaker led tackles with a total of 17, 14 solo and three assists. Bobby Chadwell was next in tackles with a total of 14, two solo and 12 assists. Michael Marsee punted once for a total of 36 yards. Garrett Green punted twice for a total of 64 yards, an average of 32 yards a kick.

The Bulldogs return to action when they host the Rutledge Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 19. This will be a district match-up.
