O’Boyle named Event Chair

MIDDLESBORO — Bell County Relay for Life officials held a “Purple Honor Luncheon” on Tuesday to honor team captains and cancer survivors. Mary Wethington, the former Event Chairperson, announced during the luncheon that Carolyn O’Boyle has been named 2008 Event Chairperson.

“We have passed the torch,” Wethington told those present for the luncheon.

The purpose for the luncheon was to honor team captains and cancer survivors. “We also want to bring some awareness to next year’s Relay for Life. We want people to start planning, fundraising, and thinking about 2008,” O’Boyle said. Relay for Life will take place on Friday, June 6, 2008.

“Also, we look for any excuse to honor survivors. They’re why we do this,” O’Boyle stated.

O’Boyle encourages anyone interested in starting or developing a team to contact Team Development Chairperson Joyce Rucker at Home Federal Bank. Any cancer survivor interested in becoming involved with Relay for Life should contact Katie Smith at National City Bank.

American Cancer Society Representative Marti Harris was the featured guest speaker for the event. Harris informed the crowd of many cancer-related statistics as they relate to Southeastern Kentuckians. For example, this area has the highest number of lung cancer deaths in the nation. “We’re going to bring these numbers down, we’re going to fight back,” Harris said.

The new slogan for the Bell County Relay for Life is, “Celebrate. Remember. Fight back.” The Purple Honor Luncheon was provided for by local merchants and Relay for Life supporters: Long’s Pic Pac, Food City, The Avenue Cafe, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Anna McDaniels, HT Hackney Wholesale, Christopher’s Creations, Ideal Print Shop, Holiday Inn Express, Home Federal Bank and National City Bank.
