LEE COUNTY, Va. — Superintendent of Lee County Schools Fred Marion has retired from his post, after a 39-year career with the system.

On July 12, following an executive session at the regular monthly meeting for the Lee County School Board, the board approved the retirement request of Marion.

Marion’s career with the school system began in 1972, and since that time he has served as teacher, principal, Director of Federal Programs and, for the past six years, as Superintendent of Schools.

Marion’s retirement will be effective September 1, 2011. The motion to accept the retirement request was made by District 2 School Board Member Donnie Brooks, who indicated that the motion was made with regret.

The open position is currently being advertised, as the board begins its search for Marion’s replacement.
