Junior forward Michael Powers led the Colonels with 21 points.
Senior guard Aaron Petry has a hot early for Whitley as he scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter and Powers added seven.
Potter kept the Bobcats in the game with 13 points of his own in the first period. Senior Kyle Lee added a 3-pointer and Bell trailed 21-16 after the first quarter.
Bobcat senior center Ryan Cox got going in the second quarter with three baskets inside. He would finish with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds. Potter hit his third 3 of the game and also hit a pair of free throws in the period.
Powers and Zack Rutherford scored five points each as Whitley maintained a slim lead going into halftime up 35-32.
The Bobcat defense picked things up considerably in the second half as they held Whitley to five points from Powers and a basket from Jason Hale. Meanwhile Cox scored seven points, Lee added three and Potter two as Bell took a 44-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Colonels got four points from Powers, but managed just eight in the final period.
Sophomore Jake Patterson scored seven of his 10 in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats took control. Potter added four more points and senior point guard Tanner Lefevers hit four free throws. Lee hit a pair of free throws to finish with 10 points and give Bell four players in double figures and the Bobcats went on to win by 12.
Bell (1-0) plays Wayne County on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Big Red Shootout at Clay County. Whitley (0-1) will host Pineville Thursday.
