CORBIN — The Bell County Lady Cats pounded out 17 hits Thursday on their way to a 9-3 win at Corbin.
Freshman catcher/third baseman Jessica Sanders led the way with four hits while junior second baseman Hillary Lowe added a double and two singles. Seniors Alex Gambrel and Rachel Yeary added three hits apiece in the win.
The Lady Cat struck quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning. Alisha Russell led off with a slap single and Gambrel followed with a base hit to right to put runners at the corners. Kristen Slusher and Lauren Spurlock brought them both home with RBI ground outs later in the inning.
Corbin rallied with two outs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Hannah Helm led off with a base hit and advanced on a passed ball. Two outs later, Katie Bernardo hit an RBI single. Whitley Gatliff followed with an RBI double to tie the game two. Kelly Farley reached on an error as Gatliff scored to put the Lady Redhounds on top.
Bell took the lead back in the top of the third and never looked back. Spurlock led off the inning with a base hit and Sanders also singled. After Haley Goodman advanced the runners with a ground out and Kendra Taylor walked, Yeary drove in the tying run with a ground out to second. Lowe followed with an RBI double to make it 4-3, Lady Cats.
In the top of the fourth the Lady Cats were at it again. This time Gambrel led off with a single and Slusher doubled. Spurlock’s ground out to first was good enough to bring in Gambrel and Sanders followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 6-3.
Bell put the game away with three runs in the fifth. Yeary singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. She then scored on Lowe’s base hit. One out later Gambrel singled, then with two down, Spurlock reached on an error as Lowe scored. Sanders completed the scoring with an RBI single to make it 9-3.
Yeary was the winning pitcher. Over seven innings she gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out four and not walking a batter.
Hannah Hart took the loss for Corbin. She led the Lady Hounds with three hits in the game while Gatliff had an RBI double and Bernardo an RBI single. Bethany Hensley and Helm singled for the other two Corbin hits.
Sanders finished with four singles, two RBI and a run scored. Lowe had a double and two singles, scored a run and also drove in two. Gambrel had three singles, walked and scored three times. Yeary also had three singles, scored once and drove in one. Slusher had a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Spurlock singled, scored a run and drove in one. Russell also singled and scored a run. Taylor had two walks in the game.
Bell County (21-8) hosts Barbourville Monday while Corbin (17-12) was set to play at North Laurel on Friday.
