SAVANNAH, Ga. — Junior second baseman Andre Rodriguez swept the All-Region First Team honors for the 2012 season as he was named ABCA Division II All-Southeast Region First Team. This announcement came from the American Baseball Coaches’ Association on Thursday morning.
In his first season for the Railsplitters, Rodriguez was the offensive leader for a team that went 21-28, finishing two games out of postseason play. For his work this year, he was named All-South Atlantic Conference First Team, NCBWA All-Southeast Region First Team and Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team. He will now add ABCA All-Southeast Region First Team distinctions to his already impressive resume from the 2012 campaign.
Rodriguez came to the Railsplitters all the way from Las Piedras, Puerto Rico and immediately led LMU in nearly every offensive category. All told, he posted a .414 batting mark, a .494 on-base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage to lead the team in those batting splits. His .414 batting average finished second among all South Atlantic Conference competitors, 19th nationally and second in the LMU record books for a single season. In reaching base in nearly half of his at-bats, Rodriguez finished fifth in the SAC and fifth in single-season history at LMU.
The rest of his stat sheet from the 2012 season was strong as he notched a team-high 60 hits that included 12 doubles and five home runs. He scored 30 runs and drove in 27 to account for 57 runs for the Railsplitters this season. He also added 22 walks at the plate.
Rodriguez notched 15 multi-hit games with four three-hit games and two four-hit contests. He saved his best for last as he ended the season on a tear, slamming 33 hits in the final 18 games of the season for an eye-popping .516 batting average with seven doubles and a .719 slugging percentage over that span. His best performance of the season came in the opening game of a three-game set against Carson-Newman as he went 4-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and a big fly.
Tusculum College’s Craig Goodman was crowned as the ABCA Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year while Catawba College’s Jim Gantt earned ABCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year in the wake of the Indians’ capturing of the Southeast Region title.
Armstrong Atlantic’s Zach Taylor garnered ABCA Southeast Region Player of the Year.
