Heartland Publications has announced the promotion of a 17-year veteran of the Harlan Daily Enterprise.

According to Michael Bush, the president and CEO of Heartland Publications, which is based in Clinton, Conn., Debbie Caldwell, the editor of the Harlan Daily Enterprise has been named regional editor of the Harlan Daily Enterprise, the Middlesboro Daily News and the Claiborne Progress. Heartland Publications is the parent company of the three newspapers.

Caldwell, born in Norfolk, Va., has been a Wallins Creek, Ky., resident since 1964. She is a 1981 graduate of James A. Cawood High School, and attended the University of Kentucky where she earned certificates in dietary science and business management.

She began her newspaper career at the Enterprise in 1995 as a part-time sports photographer before moving into news reporting. She soon began working full-time as a staff reporter, specializing in serious news items — felony incidents, fatal crashes, murders and activities of the circuit court.

Caldwell served as news editor from 2005 until January 2011 when she was named editor.

Her accomplishments include two national awards for photography, numerous awards through the Kentucky Press Association, including a series on prescription drug abuse that drew national attention.

Her photos have been published in various magazines and on the covers of phone books throughout the United States. Other accomplishments include photo correspondent work for the Associated Press.

Caldwell, who will continue as editor of the Harlan Daily Enterprise, will be working with editors at Middlesboro and Claiborne to enhance the editorial product both in print and Internet, while pooling resources so that newsrooms can operate more efficiently.

“I look forward to working with the editors and pulling together ideas to improve content for all three papers,” Caldwell said. “It’s my goal to keep the public informed on current events in both print and Internet. We now have the capabilities to bring you the news today instead of tomorrow.”
