Goodyear built an 11-4 lead over the first three innings and held on for an 11-10 win over Coca-Cola Friday at the Middlesboro Little League Tournament.
Coke scored three runs in the top of the first inning as Joey Napier and Collier Elkins had hits and Taylor McClelland walked and all three came around to score.
Goodyear answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jabari Kyle, London Stephney and Trent Stephney all walked and then came around to score those runs.
Coke pushed ahead in the second as Napier walked and later scored on a hit by McClelland to make it 4-3.
Goodyear scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Ikie Partin led off by drawing a walk, London Stephney, Trent Stephney and Evan Collett added base hits in the inning. Partin and both Stephneys scored the runs to put Goodyear up 6-4.
After holding Coke off the board in the third Goodyear scored five times in the bottom of the frame to take control. Partin and Kyle singled, London Stephney walked and Trent Stephney reached singled. Collett reached on a fielder’s choice and Blake Hubbard walked. T.J. Patterson and Brandon Hubbard also reached base in the inning as the lead grew to 11-4.
Coca-Cola didn’t go down without a fight, however. Napier and Wilder both walked to start the fourth and they both came around to score to cut the lead to 11-6.
Chris Callahan scored the seventh Coke run afte walking to start the fifth and Kyle Raines also walked in the inning, but was thrown out trying to score on a wild pitch.
It was still 11-7 going into the top of the sixth. With one out Wilder was hit by a pitch and Elkins sigled. McClelland followed with a hard shot to left that drove in both runners. McClelland doubled and was safe at third when the ball got away from the third baseman on his slide. McClelland scored on a wild pitch as Callahan walked with two out and it was a one-run game. Callahan advanced to third base on a wild pitch and a throwing error, but London Stephney got induced a pop-out that Trent Stephney caught at second to end the game.
Coca-Cola will face Community Trust in an elimination game today at 5:30 p.m. while Goodyear advances to the winner’s bracket final where they’ll face Overbay’s Monday at 7:30 p.m.
