Staff Report

The Lighthouse Mission helped families in need on Friday by hosting their annual “Back to School Giveaway” event. This was the ninth year Lighthouse held the event.

The non-profit organization gave away free clothes, shoes, school supplies and hair cuts to the individuals that were at the event. Food and drinks were also provided, as well as games for the children.

“It’s just a day of fun for the whole family,” said Lighthouse Mission Director Sharon Teaney. “We are able to show the love of Christ by helping people meet their needs.”

Had the event been a movie, it would have been a sell out. People were lined up outside the gates prior to 5 p.m., which caused the event to begin an hour early. By 5 p.m., it was projected that over 1,000 people at made their way to Old Bell High School.

It was believed that over 2,000 people would come to the event by the end of the day. Last year, over 1,600 people attended.

Teaney said churches from all over the United States have collected items and volunteered for this event. Lighthouse Mission plans and collects all year long for the event. They began setting the event up two weeks prior to the scheduled date.

“God has blessed us,” said Teaney. “It’s God’s people coming together showing the love of God to the community.”

Teaney said the Lighthouse Mission always needs volunteers and sponsors for the program. People can donate supplies or clothes at any point throughout the year. For more information on volunteering, please call 337-1834.

Teaney expressed gratitude to the community as well as the Lighthouse supporters and ministry.
