Bell County broke open a tight game late in the first half and rolled to a 54-13 win at Casey County Friday night.
Senior running back Jonathan Polly scored four touchdowns to lead the Bobcat ground attack, including three in the final four minutes of the half to break the game open.
The Bobcats took an early 6-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Polly. Later in the first quarter they made it 14-0 as Ryan Collett went 27 yards on another run and Polly added the conversion.
Casey County made a game of it in the second quarter as they stopped Bell on downs at the 31 and drove 69 yards. Alex Bolin capped the drive with a 2-yard run. The kick was no good and the Bobcat lead was just 14-6 with about five minutes to play in the half.
But it was all Bell County from there. Polly broke a 24-yard run and one play later he scored from 35 yards out. Hayden Gilbert’s kick made it 21-6 with just over four minutes left in the half.
Justin Warwick intercepted a pass at midfield on the very next play from scrimmage and Polly scored again, this time from 28 yards out.
After the Bobcats turned the Rebels over on downs, Polly got loose again just before halftime and his 22-yard TD run made it 35-6 at the half.
“They snuck one in on us after putting together that drive, but after that it was like we just exploded,” said Bell County coach Wayne Mills. “It was 14-6 with like four minutes to go and the next thing you know it’s 35-6 at halftime.”
The Bobcats got the ball to start the second half and Collett capped the opening drive of the third quarter with a 22-yard TD run and it was 41-6.
Bell led 48-6 when Bolin squirted free and galloped 57-yards in the fourth quarter to make it 48-13.
Cory Swanner added a 4-yard TD run to cap the scoring and set the final 54-13.
“We were going to try and throw it some, but I swear it was so foggy you couldn’t hardly see the players on the field,” Mills added. “We stuck to our ground game and it carried us tonight.”
Bell County (5-1, 2-0 in district play) hosts Clay County next Friday. Casey County (2-5, 1-1) plays at Wayne County next week. Wayne County knocked off Corbin 26-23 Friday, so Bell is in the driver’s seat in the district after last week’s 21-7 win over the Cardinals.
“We still have to go and play Corbin, really we’re just focused on trying to get better as a football team,” Mills said. “Last week’s win was a big one. People don’t realized just how big a win that one was for us.”
