MMS wraps up regular season

The Middlesboro Middle School Lady Jackets wrapped up their regular season in basketball with a pair of games at Cawood last Thursday.

Led by 18 points from Blair Green, the 7th & 8th graders pulled out a 50-27 win. The Lady Jackets also got 12 points from Baylie Burnsma and eight each from Morgan Thompson and Hannah Warren while Malorie Carter and Cierra Coots added two apiece.

In the 5th and 6th grade game Cawood won 33-28, handing the Lady Jackets just their second loss of the season. In that game Jackie Biscardi led Middlesboro with eight points while Baylee Woody added six, Jamayha Poe five, Ally Collett four, Sarah Brooks three and Abby Harris two.

Up next for the Lady Jackets is the 7th grade state tournament this weekend and the 8th grade state tournament Oct. 26-28, both tournaments will be in Lexington.

The MMS 7th graders recently took second place out of 18 teams at the Whitley County Classic.

They opened up with a 42-28 win over Southwestern Pulaski. Green led the way in that one with 19 points while Warren added 15. Rachel Hensley finished with six points and Poe added two.

The Lady Jackets then got past South Laurel 35-21. Green scored 16 in that one with Hensley adding 10. Five from Warren and four from Carter rounded out the scoring.

In the semifinals MMS downed Taylor County 41-25 as Green poured in 27 points. Carter finished with five, Hensley four, Poe and Warren scored two each and Brenna Voges added one.

Host Whitley County took the championship game 49-31, Green scored all 31 Lady Jacket points in the game.

Rounding up other late season action, the MMS 7th and 8th graders beat Knox Central 50-33. Blair Green scored 24 points in that one with Hannah Warren adding ten. Baylie Brunsma and Malorie Carted scored six each and Morgan Thompson finished with four.

The 5th and 6th graders knocked off Harlan 36-19 behind Jamayha Poe’s 12 points. Baylee Woody added eight and Sarah Brooks seven while Abby Harris chipped in with four points, Jackie Biscardi and Ally Collett had two each and Macy Mink scored one.

That same night the Harlan 7th & 8th graders topped the Lady Jackets 36-30 in spite of Green’s 27-point effort. Warren scored two points for MMS and Brunsma had one.

MMS also played Harlan on Oct. 1 with the Lady Jackets winning the 5th and 6th grade game and losing the 7th and 8th grade contest.

Baylee Woody and Jackie Biscardi scored eight point each to lead the MMS 5/6th to a 34-20 win. Ally Collett added five points, Sarah Brooks four, Jamayha Poe three and Aubrey Sowders, Autumn Middleton and Abby Harris finished with two each.

The Lady Dragons took a 47-39 decision in the 7th/8th game. Green again led the Lady Jackets with 17 points, Warren added eleven, Malorie Carter five and Burnsma, Thompson and Hensley scored two each.

Middlesboro’s 7th and 8th graders bounced back the next night with a pair of wins over Clay County.

Green scored 26 points and Warren added eleven to lead the 7th graders to a 47-28 victory. Carter and Poe scored four each for the Lady Jackets while Hensley added two and Voges one.

In the 8th grade game, Warren led the way with 15 points in a 49-24 MMS win. Green added 13, Brunsma seven, Hensley five, Poe four, Thompson two, Voges two and Woody one.
