An interpretive walking trail was recently dedicated at Lincoln Memorial University that highlights trees that were associated with Abraham Lincoln. The trail is located at the Lincoln Museum and includes interpretive signs that describe four trees that were interwoven with Abraham Lincoln during his life.

There are also signs that describe two historic structures located near the museum, along with a description and demonstration of split rail fence construction.

The Harrogate Tree Board, in partnership with the city of Harrogate and LMU, designed and oversaw development of the trail. Harrogate provided funding for construction of the trail and signage, and LMU provided the site and grounds crew to help plant the trees.

The tree board also partnered with several other organizations to complete the trail. The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department provided inmate labor to construct the trail and put down the wood chip trail bed. The Claiborne County Road Department provided and transported the wood chips.

Thomas Mackie and Steven Wilson with the Lincoln Museum provided assistance with signage content while the Tennessee Division of Forestry provided a tree planting grant and technical assistance with tree planting and establishment of the signs.

Member Steve Roark commented that the tree board is most appreciative of the cooperative effort put forth by all of the various groups and agencies for the Lincoln Tree project. “It was very satisfying to have so many organizations work together to complete a project for the public benefit. It shows what can get done when we all work together.”

Future plans call for a connector trail to the Daniel Boone Greenway to link it with the Lincoln Trees.
