Staff Report

Middlesboro High School (MHS) students took advantage of an opportunity in a recent mock election to voice their opinions on what has become a heated district school board race

According to the MHS mock election results, Charlotte Webb received the most votes from the students with 95. Jimmie “J.J.” Jones received the second most votes with 87.

Jeff Greene came in third, with a total of 76 votes.

Of the current members running for re-election, Kelly Shoffner received the most votes with 58. Edith “Edie” Kelley received 58 votes. Vicki Byrne received 23 votes.

The city of Middlesboro will have a chance to voice their opinion on the school board race at the polls on Nov. 6.

The school board race has been intense of late. Approximately $5,000 worth of campaign signs were allegedly stolen from Shoffner, Byrne and Kelley. There were also harassment and intimidating allegations made at that time.

The alleged crime is being investigated by the Middlesboro Police Department and the Kentucky Attorney General’s office.
