Celia Gretchen Matlock passed away on Monday (November 5, 2012) at her home in Frederick, Maryland. She was the wife of the late William Chester Matlock for 54 years.

Born on January 18, 1923 near Rose Hill, Virginia, Gretchen was the daughter of George and Nirva Harris. She was a homemaker for most of her life and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and taking care of her home. Gretchen loved her two parakeets and especially her cat “Simba”. Each spring, ducks would fly into her back yard and spend several days enjoying the food that Gretchen would provide.

Gretchen especially enjoyed speaking with her favorite niece, Juanita, on the phone twice a day, every day, and lives nearby in Mt. Airy, Maryland. Since being only 11 years apart in age, Juanita fondly remembers playing with Gretchen as a child and nicknaming her “goldilocks” because of the length and color of her hair.

In addition to her parents and husband, Gretchen was preceded in death by three brothers, Ward Harris, George Harris, Jr., and Robert Harris; two sisters, Elizabeth Lee and Lucille Presley; and one grandson, Shaun Paul Matlock.

Surviving are: her son, Paul Ray Matlock and his wife, Jolene of Walkersville, Maryland; two granddaughters, Tammy Mulford and her husband Oscar of Ijamsville, Maryland and Amanda Green and her husband Mark of Columbia, Maryland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Silver Leaf Baptist Church with the Rev. John Zion officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Silver Leaf Baptist Church.

Online condolences may be left for the Matlock Family at www.arney-mullinsfuneralhomes.com.
