No. 12 Jags Fall To No. 20 LMU

AUGUSTA, Ga. —Lincoln Memorial University rode a huge night from senior forward Jake Troyli and suffocating defense to a 67-53 win at 12th-ranked Augusta State Wednesday.

Troyle finished with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds and the No. 20 Railsplitters held ASU to 26.9-percent shooting (18-67) in the game.

LMU owned the first half, shooting 44-percent from the field while holding the Jaguars to 28-percent shooting.

Vincent Bailey scored a pair of baskets inside and Cam Carden drained a 3-pointer as the Railsplitters jumped out to a 7-2 lead. ASU rallied to go up 9-8, but the Jags were held scoreless for over 3:00 minutes as LMU took control.

Lorenza Ross and Troyli hit jumpers and layup by C.J. Wakeley pushed the lead to 14-9 by the 12:27 mark of the half.

Troyli reeled off five straight points later in the half and freshman Tim Pierce hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 28-18 with 6:08 left in the half. A layup from Wally Jones stretched the advantage to 34-22 by halftime.

The 22 points were 14 fewer than ASU had scored in any half this season.

Augusta State closed the gap to eight points early in the second half on a 3 from Devon Wright-Nelson, but consecutive baskets from Troyli put the Railsplitters back up by 12. With 13:34 to play it was 41-29.

The Railsplitters were off and running from there, as they established their largest lead of the contest by the 9:44 mark with a free throw from Troyli to grab a 48-32 advantage.

Augusta State got to within 10 on one other occasion down the stretch with a pair of free throws from Harold Doby with 5:51 left on the clock, however, LMU responded with a 5-0 run to take a 59-44 lead with 4:37 remaining. The Railsplitters went 4-5 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes to ice the 14-point win.

Lincoln Memorial improves to 8-1 on the season while Augusta falls to 6-1. It was the second straight game the Railsplitters handed an opponent their first loss of the season.

While Troyli was the only Railsplitter to reach double-figures, Wally Jones added nine points and five assists. Bailey and Ross finished with six points each. In all ten different LMU players scored in the game.

The Jags were led by Harold Doby and Josh Samuels with 11 points each while Wright-Nelson finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Railsplitters will break for Christmas with their next appearance scheduled for Jan. 2, as they are set to return to Tex Turner Arena for a nonconference contest against Trevecca Nazarene University. That game is set for an 8 p.m. tip. Lincoln Memorial defeated the Trojans, 73-52, in their first meeting this season in Nashville back on Nov. 20.
