PINEVILLE — In Friday’s early game at the Pine Mountain Classic, the Lady Lions found themselves in a struggle with Lee County after bolting to an 18-10 lead after one quarter. The Lady Kats were up 25-24 at halftime and 37-35 after three quarters.
Stacey Washington scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter and Annalee Adams hit a pair of big 3-pointers late as Pineville outscored Lee 20-13 over the final eight minutes to pull out a 55-50 win.
The Lady Lions won despite a huge effort from Lady Kat senior Sara Ross. Ross hit four 3s on her way to a game-high 22 points. Lee County also got seven points each from Savanna Noe, Natalie Watterson and Nickia Combs in the game.
Freshman guard Erica Gambrell led Pineville with 17 points while Adams finished with 12 and Devin Enix added nine. Gambrell hit three 3-pointers during the second and third quarters to keep the Lady Lions close and set the stage for the big fourth quarter.
“We came out a little sluggish and Erica Gambrell gave us a big lift just handling the ball. She handles it 90 percent of the time and to only have three turnovers was just tremendous,” Pineville coach Matt Shafer said. “Stacey Washington had a big game for us and Annalee is finally starting to find her groove coming off that ankle injury.”
Pineville (9-6) returns to action next Friday at Knox Central while Lee County (8-8) will host Menifee County Thursday.
