The three owners of Cumberland Market in Middlesboro have been arrested on gambling charges. Joseph Akers, 36, Harlod Wayne Woodward, 42, and Dallas Shackelford, 79, (all of Middlesboro) were arrested on the charge of first-degree promoting gambling. The three were arrested Wednesday evening.

Each individual was released from the Bell County Detention Center on the day of their arrest.

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) raided the business on Monday. According to a press release, over the course of a few weeks, KSP Post 10 in Harlan has received several complaints regarding the use of illegal gambling machines in Bell County.

KSP detectives Tyson Lawson and Keith Saylor along with Trooper Craig Miller were assigned to investigate these complaints.On Monday, while Miller was inside Cumberland Market located on Cumberland Avenue in Middlesboro conducting his investigation, it was made known he was a trooper. As a result of the investigation being compromised, the area was secured to preserve the evidence and a search warrant was obtained. After executing the search warrant, 12 illegal gambling machines were seized along with $963 in cash.

The case is still under investigation by KSP Det. Tyson Lawson. At the time of the seizure, investigating units were assisted on the scene by KSP sergeants Jackie Pickrell and Jimmy Young, troopers Brent Sizemore and Joey Brigmon. Also assisting were KSP K-9 Trooper Dallas Eubanks and KSP/CVE K-9 Unit, Officer Landry Collett.
