A Harrogate man was taken into custody Tuesday evening after officers say he was shooting a gun in the city limits.

John Taylor, 49, was arrested after Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department officers and the SWAT Team were called to the scene on Carlyle Road in the Shawanee area. Officers blocked the area off very soon after, keeping onlookers away from the scene.

According to Det. Bob Morelock, Taylor appeared intoxicated and was shooting a gun. Law enforcement was on the scene for over an hour attempting to negotiate with him.

“At this time we don’t have any reason to believe he was wanting to hurt himself or others,” said Morelock. “He just would not comply or answer requests to drop the weapon from the officers who arrived.”

Taylor went inside the residence and a family member arrived, according to Morelock, who then gained communication with Taylor.

“He came outside without any incident,” said Morelock.

Taylor surrendered and was taken to the Claiborne County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and possession of a weapon while committing a felony.
