The Cumberland Gap High School family is currently undergoing the process of healing following the automobile wreck that took the life of one of their own, student and Panther baseball player Ryan “Logan” Marcum.

On Tuesday, Claiborne High School students joined the Cumberland Gap students for a student-led meeting in which they shared stories about Marcum and joined together in prayer for his family and all who were hurting from the loss. Counselors from CGHS and other area schools were on hand to speak to anyone who needed help and several ministers were available as well for the students to speak with.

The Cumberland Gap students have assembled a memory wall, a photo collage in the school’s trophy case, decorated Marcum’s locker and will have a memorial service on the Panthers baseball field on Feb. 11. The office at Cumberland Gap is taking donations to be given to the family for financial assistance and T-shirts are also being sold.

“Personally, this is the first time I have actually dealt with something like this. It’s difficult and hard but we are all trying to help in any way we can,” said principal Linda Keck of the student and community response. “We want the healing process to be a positive one and the students being involved helps them more than anything. If they come to us with an idea we tweak it a little if it needs it and we go with it. The students have come up with some great ideas and being active is probably the best way for them to cope. It’s been tough, but the students have risen to the challenge.”

Marcum was a junior at CGHS when he died as the result of a wreck on Feb. 4. He is survived by his father, Kevin (Angela) Marcum and mother, Jennifer (Kenny) Price. Services were held Thursday evening at Creech Funeral Home in Middlesboro.
