Dorsey Raymond (D.R.) Alexander opened the garage in 1918, on 18th Street in Middlesboro. In 1945, the business moved to the current location at 320 North 19th Street. The garage offers both private and commercial truck and automotive repair.

The garage has always been a family oriented business.

Stanley Alexander began working with his father at the garage when he returned from his military service in Korea. Stanley’s military work consisted of primarily working on tanks, therefore giving him the necessary experience needed to work at the family business.

Stanley’s daughter, Katy Cox, has helped with the bookkeeping throughout the years. She has worked the job full-time since she retired in 2008.

Stanley and his daughter, along with a handful of dedicated employees and loyal clientele, have managed to keep the family business open for 95 years, even throughout these hard economic times.

Although all businesses go through hard times, especially when you have been around for almost 100 years, the business has managed to survive through numerous economic down times. They hope to survive and continue in business for many years to come.

“We just hope the economy stays with us,” said Stanley.

Stanley became owner of the family business in 1970, when D.R. had a stroke and could no longer work. Cox enjoys working alongside her father everyday.

“He’s like a fixture here. This is his life,” said Cox.

In the past, Alexanders has been voted Best Garage in the Tri-State area by Daily News readers. They are hoping to be around to win the award for many years to come.
