Buttery’s Floor Covering has been chosen as this week’s Surviving the Hard Times series in recognition of more than four decades of service to Middlesboro and the surrounding area.
Donald Buttery opened Buttery’s Floor Covering in 1971. The store carries a full line of floor coverings and serves Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.
“We sell laminate, hardwood, tile, carpet, vinyl,” listed Buttery. “Anything for floors, we do it.”
The store has been so successful throughout the years, that it has had to relocate four times since opening. Buttery’s has always remained true to Middlesboro and each relocation has been within the city. The numerous relocations all came as a direct result of the need for expansion to meet customer needs and demands.
Buttery’s Floor Covering is currently located in downtown Middlesboro at 1817 Cumberland Ave. and despite losing $275,000 from the flood of 2011, Buttery is continuing to run his shop at its current location in downtown.
Although business has declined at times over the past 42 years, Buttery credits his success to the loyalty of his customers.
“(We have) a whole lot of repeat customers,” said Buttery. “Third and fourth time repeats.”
This was evidenced by one of the customers in the shop on Friday.
Anita Miller, of Middlesboro, has purchased flooring supplies from Buttery’s on so many occasions, she has lost count.
“Counting the times at the old stores, lets see,” mused Miller. “At least ten.”
Buttery currently employs four workers in his shop, including his son, and works with approximately ten subcontractors.
