Paying for college may have become a little easier for area youth after their top finishes in the Pine Mountain Chapter of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE) MATHCOUNTS competition held recently on the Middlesboro campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.
Individual winners were: first place, Autumn Dunaway, Cumberland; second place, Matthew Roddy, Harlan; and third place, Matthew Saylor, Middlesboro.
Saylor receives a $500 scholarship per year for four years to Western Kentucky University.
Other top individual winners are: fourth place, Jaden Hall, Rosspoint; fifth place, A.J. Teagle, Black Mountain; sixth place, Mason Huddleston, Bell Central School Center; seventh place, Ramy Ghanim, Middlesboro; eighth place, Caleb Long, Rosspoint; ninth place, Benjamin Lewis, Rosspoint; and 10th place, Alex Lewis, Black Mountain.
Team winners were first place, Middlesboro; second place, Harlan; and third place, Black Mountain.
Middlesboro team members include Hayden Bennett, Owen Collin, Ramy Ghanim, Sydney Lay and Matthew Saylor. Amy Martin is the coach.
Corey Napier, a member of the engineering staff at Vaughn and Melton in Middlesboro, is the KSPE Pine Mountain Chapter’s MATHCOUNTS coordinator.
Sponsors of the chapter competition included Coca-Cola, Papa Johns, Vaughn and Melton, Western Kentucky University and the KSPE.
Top teams and top individuals from across the state will advance to the state completion scheduled for March 23, in Lexington.
About 160 middle school students representing 60 schools across the Commonwealth of Kentucky will compete at the Clarion Hotel North on Newtown Pike in Lexington.
At the state competition, besides receiving trophies, T-shirts and certificates, the top four students will win four-year, full tuition college scholarships to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville* and an expenses-paid trip to the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington D.C. on May 9-12, where they will represent Kentucky for the national title and individually compete for additional scholarships, a trip to US Space Camp, medals and more.
Students who place fifth through tenth on March 23 will receive an annual tuition scholarship of $1,500 per year for four years at either of the universities listed above. (*Five years if the student attends U of L and majors in engineering.)
