Organizers say the Dr. Seuss celebration held Saturday at Middlesboro Mall was a success.

The day promoted literacy and was filled with free family fun. It was sponsored by The Children’s Reading Foundation and Ready for Kindergarten.

The morning started off with green eggs and ham at Lazy Joe’s. The colorful breakfast was such a success that it was standing room only for most of the morning.

Entertainment was nonstop throughout the day. In between events, children and their families were able to walk around to view the different exhibits set up to share information.

Exhibitors from The Children’s Reading Foundation distributed to free books to both children and adults. Ready for Kindergarten passed out information for the 2013 spring session to interested parents.

Bell Central was represented by assistant principal Jennifer Wilder. He shared information about the school’s “Once Upon a Friday” reading program — a rewards program involving students and parents at the school.

Book Haven donated $2 coupon vouchers for all in attendance to get a start on summer reading.

Staci Slusher Tumblers were among the groups providing entertainment. A large crowd gathered to watch the girls as they danced and tumbled.

Next, children gathered around to hear local author Candida Fuson Sullivan read her newest story about Zippy the Zebra.

After the storytelling was completed, Kayla’s Dance performed for the crowd.

There was also a costume contest and parade. The costume contest was broken down into three age divisions — newborn to 8 years old, 9 to 12 years old and 13 and over. Thing 1 and Thing 2 appeared in each division.

The event closed with Brian O’Brien from WRIL reading to the children.
