Lincoln Memorial University is collaborating with Humanities Tennessee to offer a seven-day residential writing workshop on June 23-29, for rising 10th-12th graders and graduating seniors who have a sincere interest in creative writing.

The Appalachian Young Writers’ Workshop (AYWW) is an opportunity for young people to explore the craft of writing. Set in the Appalachian Mountains in Harrogate, Tenn., students will learn from the region’s foremost writers of fiction, creative non-fiction, lyricists and poets.

The AYWW faculty are all talented, published writers that enjoy working with creative young people and hail from the Appalachian region.

Tuition for the workshop is $450, and includes all costs for the week — room, meals, class materials and instruction. Scholarships are available for applicants who demonstrate financial need. Interested students should send a complete application including a registration form, a recent writing sample and a complete copy of the family’s most recently filed 1040 statement claiming the applicant as a dependent. Scholarship applicants do not need to send a deposit.

A complete application consists of a registration form along with a recent sample of your writing and a $100 deposit. All fees can be paid by check made payable to Humanities Tennessee, money order, MasterCard or Visa. The deposit will be applied to tuition.

The postmark deadline for all scholarship applications and materials is May 17. The postmark and payment deadline for all general applications is June 3.

The student teacher ratio at the workshop is 12:1 to ensure all students receive personal attention and instruction from the workshop’s exceptional faculty and staff.

Students attend workshop classes in fiction, lyric writing, poetry and more each day. A typical day begins with breakfast in the cafeteria at 8 a.m. Morning classes are from 9-11 a.m. followed by lunch at noon. Afternoon classes are from 1-3 p.m. followed by a full group meeting and faculty office hours from 3-4 p.m. Students have dinner together and then are treated to special evening programs and activities. Dorm check is at 10 p.m. and lights out is at 10:30 p.m.
