Clay County sophomore Tyler ‘Chip’ McDaniel and Bell County sophomore Maci Morris captured the 2013 13th Region Media Boys and Girls Player of the Year awards.

McDaniel guided his team to a 26-7 record, including a 49th District championship and the school’s first 13th Region championship dating back to 2001.

He played a big part in Clay County’s 15-game win streak during the end of the season and he also led the Tigers with an 18.5 scoring average. He was a threat from three-point range, knocking down 71-of-195 three-point attempts (36.4 percent) and led the state in free throw shooting by connecting on 146-of-168 attempts (86.9 percent).

Morris earned Player of the Year honors by guiding her team to a 27-6 record along with a 52nd District title and an appearance in the 13th Region title game. She led the 13th Region by scoring more than 21 points a game while finishing the year connecting on more than 50 percent of her shot attempts.

Clay County coach Robert Marcum was named Boys Coach of the Year after guiding the Tigers to a 26-7 record and the school’s first 13th Region title in 12 years.

Marcum’s squad lost four of five games during the midway point of the season before winning 15 games in a row, which included an 84-76 win over Harlan County in the 13th Region title game.

Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons was named Girls Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Redhounds to a 27-9 record, a 50th District championship and the program’s first 13th Region championship since 1981.

Corbin got off to a slow start, going 2-4, which included 20 and 33-point losses to Bell County, the same team the Lady Redhounds beat in the 13th Region title game, 63-60.

North Laurel eighth grader Peyton Broughton was named Boys Newcomer of the Year while Middlesboro seventh grader Blair Green captured the Girls Newcomer of the Year award.

Broughton averaged 9.6 points on the season, 7.2 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 4.1 assists this season. Green led the Lady Yellow Jackets with a 14.4 scoring average and also pulled down six rebounds per game.

Your article states that Tyler McDaniel led the state in free throw shooting. This is incorrect. Seth Jeffrey of Pineville led the state with 89.5%. Ethan Rowe of Pikeville was second with 87%. Tyler McDaniel was third. Go to http://khsaa.org/httpdocs/basketball/regularseason/2012/statsbit.htm for correct information.
