Coal powers our Christmas lights

To the editor:

In this Christmas season, I would like to remind The Daily News readers that electricity made from coal is the most economical of any other power source in this part of the country. In all probability, your electricity is produced from coal. The twinkling of the lights on your Christmas tree, house decorations and yard ornaments shine as a result of coal being burned at a power generating plant.

Even so, the current administration in Washington would like to stop all usage of coal. Government regulators are “sitting” on environmentally sound mining permit applications, forcing some mine operators to send people home. Coal mining is needed now as much as ever, as there is no alternative energy source in place to meet the demand for electricity now being produced from coal.

The FACES of Coal (Federation for American Coal, Energy and Security) organization was recently formed to educate and rally all walks of people around coal and coal mining (http://www.facesofcoal.org/). As a member of FACES, I urge everyone to visit their website, review the information presented there, and consider becoming a member. Join us today and keep your Christmas lights shining brightly- with coal.

Merry Christmas,

John F. Enyart

Ashland, Ky.

Why does this form letter say that "the current administration in Washington would like to stop all usage of coal"? And why does he not at least offer some data, some actual information, to bolster such a sweeping accusation? More than half of the electricity in this country comes from coal. Even if it were possible for this or any other administration to stop the usage of coal, to do so would send the entire economy into a tailspin, one that would negatively impact the entire global economy. No politician would do such a thing even if they could. The current slight decline in US coal consumption is a result of our experiencing the worst recession since the Great Depression. It is not the result of a deliberate intention to "stop all usage of coal." This is SO manipulative, so dishonest, and is motivated by nothing more than a political agenda. Fortunately for Faces of Coal -- and our own Chamber of Commerce which is now complicit in this dishonesty -- there is no shortage of people in this area willing to believe this tripe. And that is why Bell County will continue to be one of the poorest counties in the country, without the economic diversity necessary for real prosperity, and its people among the most poorly educated nationally, as it exports its best and brightest young people, the very ones it can least afford to lose.

After finding Mr. Enyart's EXACT letter sent to many papers throught the state, I'm wondering if the FORM Letter he got from a website said exactly what his opinion was, or whether he has a personal opinion other than a letter writing campaign promoting FACES and coal?
