PINEVILLE — Pineville physician Dr. Lawrence K. Butcher died early Thursday.

Butcher, who has been on the staff at Pineville Community Hospital and operated an obstetrics/gynecological practice in Pineville since 1979, passed away around 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

His loss, says PCH Personnel Director Greg Nunnelly, will be felt not only at the hospital, but throughout the community as well.

“Our staff and community are devastated by the huge loss. He will be missed by us all,” said Nunnelly.

During his 30-plus years at Pineville, he delivered 3,149 babies, and performed over 6,000 surgical procedures.

A native of Paintsville, Ky., Butcher was a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Medicine, a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduated from Officer’s Candidate School (OCS) training. While serving in the Vietnam War, he was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 6, from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Arnett & Steele Funeral Home of Pineville. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m.

Dr. Butcher was a great doctor! He delivered my precious baby girl, and I am forever grateful. I hate to think of having to trust anyone else with bringing such a wonderful gift into this world.

He will be missed.
