Jackets win at Claiborne, 6-5

NEW TAZEWELL, Tenn. — The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets pulled out a 6-5 win at Claiborne, Tenn., Thursday.

With starters Jake Partin and Austin Baker resting injuries and the Jackets saving their regular pitchers for Saturday’s State All “A” Classic, Middlesboro got help from some unexpected sources.

Sophomore Tyler Partin pitched into the fifth inning to pick up a win in his first varsity start. Catcher Bubba Brock connected for his second home run of the season in the sixth inning for what proved to be a big insurance run.

Senior Jessey McDaniel got the start at third base and singled, tripled and reached on an error as he drove in two runs and scored another.

Timmy Helton also tripled and singled and scored a run while Evan Womack had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in one.

Thomas Epperson, Alex Pratt and Chris Short also had hits for the Jackets while Kendall Ferguson walked and scored a run and also drove in one with a sacrifice fly.

For Claiborne Daniel Runions had two doubles and scored a run and Mark Estep singled twice. Matt Johnson and Tyler Bussell had RBI singles, Derek Robinson doubled and scored a run and Jacob Holt singled and walked twice.

Dakota Massengill drove in run with a sacrifice fly and reached base twice on errors. Josh Wigfield walked twice, stole a base and scored a run on a wild pitch.

Holt went all seven innings for the Bulldogs while Michael Wilson came on in the fifth and closed out the game while allowing on unearned run to get a save.

Middlesboro (16-5) returns to action Saturday in Lexington at the State All “A” against Russellville at 10:30 a.m. Claiborne will be in action Saturday in the Bell County Invitational where they’ll take on the hosts at 10:30 a.m.
