The Pineville Mountain Lions' first win in 11 tries was a dandy.

The Lions rallied for a touchdown in the final minute of the game, and then held off a last-ditch McCreary Central try for a 17-12 victory in their season opener.

Pineville was hoping to start well as new head coach Tom Bryant tries to rebuild after last season's 0-10 campaign.

Junior fullback Ben Johnson got the Lions on the scoreboard in the opening quarter with a touchdown run.

The Loins' special teams came through in the second period as junior Matt Combs booted a 20-yard field goal.

McCreary Central came back and held a tenuous 12-10 lead late in the fourth quarter.

But Pineville refused to go down and junior running back David Adams clinched the game for the Lions with an 8-yard touchdown run with just 59 seconds remaining in the game.

McCreary Central tried to drive in the final minute, but Adams knocked the ball free from a Raider receiver on fourth down to preserve the victory.

Pineville (1-0) returns to action on Saturday, August 27, playing host to Berea in the annual Laurel Bowl. McCreary Central (0-1) visits Oneida, Tn. on Friday.
