Agnes Bishop Hall passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 6, 2012, after a brief illness. Born in Middlesboro on August 5, she was the daughter of William Bryant and Elizabeth Turner Bishop.
A magna cum laude graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Agnes also earned a masters and rank I degree in Education from Union College. She taught at Ellen Myers Elementary school in Harrogate before transferring to Yellow Creek Elementary where she taught for over 28 years only missing one day. She took great pleasure in teaching and was especially excited to learn about former students and their accomplishments as they matured into adulthood.
A member of First Baptist Church, Agnes was a former Sunday school teacher but remained active with the Children’s Music Camp, the Social Committee, the Agape Circle, and was Co-Chair of the Bereavement Committee. The fellowship and worship she gained with her church community continued to be a meaningful and spiritually enriching part of the life.
Agnes enjoyed sports of all types, participating in softball and golf at a younger age, and most recently as a spectator of her granddaughters’ softball and basketball, and the baseball games of her grandson. She was also an avid follower of the University of Kentucky athletics.
She is survived by her children: William “Toby” (Karen) of Middlesboro, Richard of Raleigh, N.C., Martha (Marty) and Larry Sullivan of Roanoke, Va., and Elizabeth (Libby) and Ron Jervis along with grandchildren, Teddi Ann Hall Jervis and Jack Merritt Hall Jervis of London, Ky. She is also survived by two sisters and one sister-in-law, Lucille Bishop Earle, Louise Bishop VanBever, and Wilma Carmona Bishop, all of Middlesboro. Also surviving are her very special friends that she lovingly and repeatedly referred to as her surrogate family, Mary Lou Massengill, Glenna Laws, Mildred Alexander, Eleanor Grace and many other out of town childhood friends that she remained in regular contact.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ted W. Hall, her parents, and many brother and sisters.
The family will receive friends at Shumate Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 8, from 5-7 p.m. with private services to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Middlesboro High School general scholarship fund or to the charity of your choice.
