The Center for Rural Development and Somerset Tourist and Convention Commission are joining together for a holiday community event, The Coasters Christmas Concert.
The legendary rhythm and blues vocal group will perform a selection of holiday classics from their Christmas album and some of their greatest hits over the last 60 years on Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at The Center in Somerset.
“We are excited to partner with Somerset Tourist and Convention Commission to present this special holiday concert and community event for the entire family,” said Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events at The Center. “Music by The Coasters is timeless and just as popular today as it was nearly six decades ago.”
The Coasters, one of the pioneer R&B groups from the Golden Age of rock ‘n’ roll, will celebrate the holidays by performing songs from their newly released Christmas album and a medley of their greatest hits.
In 1956, The Coasters recorded their first No. 1 hit, “Down in Mexico,” selling more than 500,000 copies. One year later, they topped the charts again with a double-sided smash, “Yakety Yak,” and “Charlie Brown.”
And the hits just kept on coming. The Coasters continued to dominate the billboards with such hits as “Poison Ivy,” “Along Came Jones,” “Little Egypt,” “Love Potion #9,” “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart,” and “Baby That’s Rock ‘N’ Rock,” just to name a few, which earned them several Gold Records.
“This concert is sure to put you in the holiday spirit as we celebrate the season,” Winstead said. “You will not want to miss The Coasters Christmas Concert at The Center.”
