The game was scoreless for the majority of the first quarter. After an Abby Harris basket with little under four minutes to play, it was all Bell County as the Lady Cats overpowered Oneida Baptist Institute 44-17 on Tuesday.
“It was kind of an ugly basketball game, but I was proud of the way we played hard,” said Bell coach David Teague. “That’s the one thing I’ve tried to get them to understand. We got to play hard every single trip.”
“I felt like we done some good things defensively, but we got to continue working ourselves offensively and continue to try and get better. A lot of those baskets were off steals and turnovers that we were able to go with. We just got to get to where we are able to do a better job in halfcourt sets.”
Bethany Miracle paced the team both offensively and defensively throughout the game. She finished with a double-double after scoring a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. The senior shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from long range.
“She played a heck of a basketball game,” said Teague. “That’s what I told them in the locker room. Everybody has to buy in and do the things that you’re doing and you’ve been asked to do.”
Abby Harris finished the game with eight points off the bench, while Alex Brock finished the game with seven points.
On the other side of the court, Madorie Flahn led the Lady Mountaineers with 12 points. Aida Salutova finished the game with three, and Alexis Pernell finished with two points.
The first quarter remained quite with multiple steals and turnovers. With 4:53 remaining, Harris scored a basket to give Bell a 2-0 lead. A minute later, Brittany Davis scored to increase the lead to 4-0.
A Miracle layup gave Bell County a 6-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Lady Cats found their stride in the second quarter outscoring OBI 22-4. Bell went on a 10-2 run to open the quarter with Miracle tallying six points. A free throw by Flahn ended the drought with a free throw to cut the lead to 16-3.
Bell finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to take a 28-4 lead into halftime.
The second half was similar to the first as the Lady Cats outscored OBI 16-13 en route to a 44-17 victory.
Bell County (1-0) will travel to Cumberland Gap, Tennessee at 6 p.m. on Friday.
OBI (0-2) will host Buckhorn (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
